31 de Octubre (Halloween! Halloween!)

Today was a great day for us! After we got out of class, we went over to Shehadi to eat lunch. It was fun to watch the passersby on the street. Many of the kids were dressed in their Halloween costumes as was the wait staff of the restaurant!

Later on that evening, Elizabeth and I went home so that we could pass out the candy that we had bought for our trick-or-treaters! Here in Peru, for some reason instead of saying, “trick or treat,” the kids just say, “Halloween.” It’s really quite hilarious when they ring the bell and just say, “Halloween!” Ha. Since we live in an apartment and our visitors have to be buzzed in, we decided to just throw candy out the window. :) The feeling was similar to being in a parade, and we had so much fun! Flamingo Road Church had printed up invitations to be passed out on Halloween, so we taped candy to them and then got to throwing! As kids walked by, I just stuck my arm out the window (we have bars so I couldn’t get my head out) and yelled, “Halloween!” The kids came by and we began dropping down the goodies. They really seemed to enjoy the adventure of trying to catch their candy, and I had one of the best Halloweens I’ve ever had! I’m not going to lie, I was kind of wishing that we’d had some water balloons, too. . . :)

Some people are against Halloween, but our pastor spoke on Sunday about how we are called to be salt and light to the world. Halloween, then, becomes just another opportunity for us to do this. Next year I plan on being salt and light WHILE wearing a costume. :)
