2 de Septiembre (Church!)

For our first day of church here in Lima, we went with Jeff and Judy to Iglesia Bautista de Gracia. Afterwards, Jeff and Judy, who know about my love of red meat, took us to Longhorn Grill so I could have a steak!! It was so yummy! I got a pretty good cut of meat, una papa del horno, una ensalada y una coca cola for only s/.35! (s/. is the symbol for soles and s/.3.15=$1).

Then, we took a stroll around Jockey Plaza which has a lot of stores. We decided to buy a heater to donate to the Lighthouse. You’ll never believe where we bought it. ... Ace Hardware! How awesome. :) Then you just order the tank of propane and someone delivers it to your house and hooks it up for you. Propane is pretty cheap, just s/.33.

After buying that, Jeff and Judy offered to take it back to our house so we could have some time to shop. As we were on our way to shop, we noticed a man who was drawing caricatures. I looove those!! Liz and I each took a turn as Pepe gave his best cartoon-like impression of each of us. They only cost s/.15 each! Not bad. Now we have something to take home to remember our first week in Peru! Pepe was very nice, and told me that he doesn’t really like reggaetton. :)

Next, we stopped into Ripley’s Department Store and found a sale! Since winter here is almost over, they had all of their winter clothes on clearance, and since it’ll be winter when we return home, we bought some! I got a pink scarf, a blue shirt, a black sweater and some cute socks! Then we stopped at a Gelateria and had some ice cream. Of course I ordered the Brownie flavored gelato. :) Yum!

OK OK, don’t fall asleep on me; it’s going to get more interesting. :) We took our first taxi ride!! We got into the taxi and the man said it would be s/.8. Benavides y Los Caminos del Inca was our destination, and we made it!! Woo hoo!!

We also made our first pharmacy visit here. I have a bit of the “Lima Crud” as Judy calls it, and so does Elizabeth. In Peru you don’t need a prescription for medicine, you just tell them what you want! So, I got a Z-Pack and she got some sort of cough syrup. . :) With our new heater and medicines, we should be better in no time!

In the Sunday school class, we watched a NOOMA video that covered the topic of anger. This lesson was so striking to me, that I actually took some notes. :) In the video, the speaker talked about how anger is a natural response by our body signaling that there is something going on that we don’t like. He said that our anger could be used to figure out the things we are passionate about in life. What makes you angry? What would you be willing to fight for? The speaker discussed the anger of Jesus. He said that when Jesus became angry, he then used that anger to make the world a better place. Jesus’ anger “increased the peace of the world.” The question challenged me, “What makes you angry?” “Some people are looking for a fight because they aren’t in one,” he said. When we don’t use our lives for important causes, petty things seem so significant. A driver cuts us off in traffic, and we freak out! Or someone gets the table at a restaurant that we thought belonged to us. . . Petty things that we focus our energy on seem inconsequential when we focus ourselves on God. The challenge becomes to use our anger in a healthy and wonderful way. “May it fuel sacred acts of healing and restoration.”

It was so good to talk to you, even for a minute Sunday night. Cara really warmed up to "unca jack" and was sitting by him watching the races, then climbing on him and even had him looking at pictures on the wall telling him who they were! it was really funny! So glad they came over, we had a very nice visit! So glad things are going good there, enjoyed the bit about anger - I've been in a bad mood today, no reason, just don't want to be here at work I guess :(
Anyway, continuing to pray for your safety and that all is accomplished you and Liz set out to do! What a rewarding adventure you must be having!
Love you
